Ballynellard

Bullaun Stone

I had been planning to visit this bullaun for awhile. I was in the Blackwater area so decided to take the short drive up to the stone. Like a number of bullauns in county Wexford it is situated along the wayside. The oval stone is 0.6 metres long by 0.41 wide and has an unusual rectangular bullaun centered in the upper face. It reminds me of a socket for a cross. I wonder if it was ever used as a base for a wayside cross? A small but interesting stone, worth a visit.

Situated: From Blackwater head west on the R744 for 1.1 kilometres, then turn right at the thatched cottage. After 2k there is a right turn. The bullaun stone is on your left on the grass verge, opposite the right turn.
